These are the calloused words of old Mr. Potter in Frank Capra’s timeless Christmas classic, It’s a Wonderful Life.

I have never believed sentimental is hogwash. We have memories for reasons:

• They inform us when we seek our path.

• They warn us when we start to stray.

• They warm us when we feel lost or alone.

For me, today is the first workday of 2021.

It is also my only grandchild’s sixteenth birthday.

I have reason to look back and ahead. I also have this moment, this brand new year, to learn, to love, to live” to remember”
