TUESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2000
WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION?
My heart is overflowing with a good theme; I recite my composition concerning the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer. Psa. 45:1 (NKJV)
Every artist, whether he works with paints on a canvas or words on a paper, needs inspiration. Whistler had his mother. Holmes had a sentimental moment concerning a U.S. Navy frigate. Someone more familiar with Lord Byron’s story than I might tell us about the woman he envisioned as he wrote, “She Walks In Beauty.” And what about Hemingway looking out upon the waves from his seaside home as he penned, “The Old Man And The Sea?”
Most of us have something or someone about which (or whom) we are passionate. Our shining artistic moment is likely to come as we reflect upon that thing/event/person.
What does it for you? Who or what are you passionate about? You do have a passion, I hope. A passionless life is a mere existence, a filling of space and time. You need something to stir the embers of your soul.
David had such a passion. He was, we would have to say, among the most passionate men who ever left his mark upon this earth. Look at his life. See how deeply he cared, how hard he worked, how high he reached. Even his blunders were the product of his passion and zest for life. You don’t have to read too far in his writings or follow the path of his life too long before you are able to identify David’s passion.
It was God!
David was consumed with his love, admiration, and awe of God Almighty. When he thought of God the artist in him was unleashed. He would pen the most eloquent words, he would compose the most memorable songs, he would play the most beautiful tunes when his mind was filled with the One he loved.
How about you? Do you have the kind of relationship with God that just makes you want to sing…or write…or draw…or whatever it is you do best? Does your God inspire you? I can promise you this: if you ever get to know Him like David did, He will! He will fill your mind and heart until you are overflowing. You will feel that you must express it or burst.
You may not be an artist or a writer or a poet or a musician. But God will make your life His canvas. Just wait! The Master Artist will write His story on the pages of your soul. Your very life will become a work of art. Then you will find your inspiration.
A Prayer For Today: “Father, I want to know You like David did. I want to burn with a holy passion for You. I want to know how it feels to overflow. Fill me, Lord. Move me. Inspire me. Make me a work of art so that others will be able to observe You in me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
