and other things, as well
Hey folks,
Everything! and other things, as well.
We have ourselves a new tagline. I ripped it off of Matthew Sturgis, author of Oscar Wilde: a Life. He was writing about conversations Wilde and his literary contemporaries held and quoted one of the fellows as saying that they discussed “everything and other things, as well.”
It grabbed me as soon as I read it. I thought, “That explains The Journal.”
The Sword and the Broom
Experts say the best way to build a loyal following and community of loyal, engaged subscribers is to find your niche and focus on it.
The late Vance Havner, a Southern Baptist evangelist who preached all over America for more than 70 years told about finding himself on the same train as the famous evangelist R.A. Torrey. Havner was very young, not yet 20. Torrey asked him what he was doing with his life. Havner did not yet have that figured out.
“Young man,” Torrey told him,” find one thing and stick with it.”
Havner said of the conversation, “Torrey wanted me to be a sword with one point rather than a broom with hundreds.”
Hand me that Broom
I find it impossible to focus on one thing to the exclusion of everything else that interests or inspires me. I love history and technology. I relish the spiritual and the absurd. I have been telling and writing stories since I was a boy. I love fiction. I also spent 20 years in ministry, 13 as a senior pastor. I love writing devotionals. I am fond of poetry and prose.
I write what I want and let the readers gather at your leisure, pleasure, or whatever attracts them.
If you like the way I think and the things I write, I welcome your support as a subscriber. For the cost of a Venti drink per month, you can support this effort. I will be your workman, worthy of his hire. I hope you will become a paid subscriber. But if you choose the free train and subscribe that way, I appreciate that, too.
A writer would rather be anything than ignored.
