1,000 Word Essay Contest

Got a writer in you somewhere? Let that rascal out!

A Bright Idea!

Guest Author Wanted

The Concept

The idea came to me to write a ten-essay ebook with each essay exactly 1,000 words long. If a picture is worth a thousand words, what kind of picture can one paint with a thousand words?

Then I got a better idea! What if I write nine instead and include a tenth from an http://sparkwebgroup.com/lazerlanes/our-activities/laser-tag/ essay contest winner? That’s where you come in. If you have the writing chops and the urge, why not set that story that’s burning a hole in your heart free? It can be purely made-up, autobiographical, a story you heard, something you witnessed…you name it!

The contest entries will be judged by a three-person panel, including myself.

  • Must be EXACTLY 1,000 words in length (not counting the title or headings, sub-headings, etc.

Best Practices

  • Write your rough draft. Let it flow.
  • Use a good spelling/grammar checker.
  • Use action verbs when possible.
  • Avoid too many adverbs.
  • Check your word count; tighten your language – write tight!
  • Entertain yourself. If you are entertained, encouraged, enlightened, emotional, you will strike a chord with the reader.
  • Proofread your work. When you are done, walk away for a few days, then read it cold. Still like it?
  • Repeat until you are satisfied.
  • Submit your masterpiece!
